The injury-hit Vortex have upset the Canterbury Patriots by taking an early lead and rolling with the punches to outlast the Patriots 50-39. The Vortex were helped by a career-best game by no. 8 Phil Kronfeld, who scored five tries largely by just being in the right place at the right time. The Patriots scored some incredible tries, but the Vortex managed to respond to each Patriots try to stay slightly ahead throughout.
We did lose another player to injury, with flanker Ollie McCaw going off after 50 minutes.

Elsewhere Border were completely outplayed to get thrashed by Bloemfontein in a brilliant display of attacking rugby by the Patriots. The Invasion were pretty ordinary - full credit to Cento's boys for an outstanding game. The less said about Border the better - this was hardly their finest effort and they were even more disappointing than last weekend's effort. It is becoming obvious why this side has never been at this level before.

In League 5 Toronto were annihilated by Lederhosen's Barbarians in another terrific display of rugby. The Freeze were never in the contest. It seems the loss of star fullback Jimmy Hastings impacted on the team much more significantly than I anticipated it would. The Barbarians were incredible for an 0-2 side while the Freeze were dreadful for a 2-0 side. That's rugby - some days you just consign to the toilet, flush it and move on to next week.
