  • Help & Newbie Guide

In forthcoming weeks/months, we'll try to develop a help (which will replace the existing in-game help functions) and newbie guides, especially for new managers joining the fray Obviously, it will be a collaborative effort by all managers that will share their experience, knowledge and wisdom in developing these guides.

Perhaps it's best to develop these by means of a shared folder/link in dropbox, word doc format?

Graham - with your experiences of similar strategy games and since you joined GRM in the recent past, what are the essential elements you would like to see in a newbie guide, i.e. the information you would have preferred to have at your disposal in the first couple weeks of joining the game?

I suspect that many first time managers spend too freely on players, and run into financial trouble, so a very strong recommendation should be made to compare your likely income with your weekly expenses.

I would strongly recommend that they avoid using focus training for more than a tiny number of players at most.

Make them aware that there are penalties for playing players out of position, so it is strongly recommended to play specialists.

Key attributes and skills for each position would be useful for buying and training purposes.

Make it clear at which point in the weekly schedule the cutoff time for transfer listing players and making bids is.

Make it clear as to the pros and cons of numbers for attacking and defensive rucks.

Suggest that they play training teams so that they can see their strategies in action and modify as they see fit.

If I think of more, I'll post again.

Likely wages range according to overall player rating.

Danielw, I'm happy to assist but only from next year onwards.

The fact that you can toggle between player attributes/skills and his season/career performance stats.

You can also access this information for all other teams in your division.

I think that new managers need it to be made clear that although GRM and NRM are very similar, that the transfer market prices and player market values are very much different,
A player that will sell for $2 million in NRM would only sell for around $250,000 in GRM.

I've added already a lot of material to the guide (click on the link above), and in some instances I was surprised (or once again reminded) how complicated or "involved" some of the issues are - I can't imagine we never have had such a guide before! (it's much more than the existing help guide as it focuses on practical guidance for a manager). I'm confident it will add a lot of value to the GRM experience - somehow I think a lot of managers playing the game for some time already, will find some "new" information or that issues they were uncertain about, will be properly explained by the guide. But this a WIP process, so obviously it can be improved/expanded a lot yet, so contributions will be welcomed. I don't really want to quote that man Trump, but I'll use an adapted version of his slogan: "Make GRM great (again)! as the incentive to drive the process.

Magnificent effort so far Daniel. I can't find fault with anything you've written.

Very nice read! I would just suggest to differentiate between 1. explaining the facts of the game, 2. an objectively perceived 'truisms', like acceptable player skill levels and 3. strategies, like what facility to upgrade first etc.

I agree - this is taking shape beautifully.
I also agree with moujik - part of the beauty of the game is that strategy is determined by the manager, and in some cases the advice in the guide could be misinterpreted as the optimal strategy. I might suggest putting hints/tips in shaded boxes so users can tell the difference between objective and subjective information.

Thanks, good ideas - I'll make the hints/tips in italics or boxes, whatever fits in the best with the current format.

Make it clear that the skills of older players don't decrease, but their wages get higher.

Yep, thanks, good point - I've added comments about wages that won't drop with age because the player is not losing some of his attributes and skill. I've also inserted a paragraph stating that a player's training rates would drop from age 29 - thus a lower addition to skills and attributes per training session once reaching that age.

New managers should be aware that increasing a player's fitness will decrease his chances of injury.

Also, that playing an injured player will stall his recovery.

If you look through teams that have heaps of injured players, you'll see that fitness levels are not good throughout the squad.
                            I just put 1+1 together.
If I'm wrong, I'm sure that Game will say so.
